McKinney-Vento (Homeless Education)
What Is McKinney‑Vento (MKV) and Immediate Enrollment?
The McKinney‑Vento Homeless Assistance Act (MKV) is a federal law that ensures students experiencing homelessness have equal access to a free, appropriate public education. Students qualify for McKinney‑Vento services if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including those living in shelters, motels, temporary housing, doubled‑up situations, or other unstable living arrangements.
Immediate Enrollment is a key protection under McKinney‑Vento. It means eligible students must be enrolled in school right away, even if they are missing typical enrollment documents such as proof of residency, immunization records, school records, or guardianship paperwork. Immediate enrollment minimizes educational disruption and ensures students can begin attending classes, participating in services, and receiving support without delay while required documents are gathered.
