Three meetings are planned for November to discuss the rezoning plans for the new Southwest Elementary School. The meetings are designed to have open discussion and communication with parents and community members. The rezoning will affect homes currently in the Cason Lane, Scales, and Overall Creek areas.
Scales – Nov. 14, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Overall Creek – Nov. 28, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Parents may attend any meeting regardless of location or school.
Consideration is being given to rezoning portions of the city situated on the west side of town. If adopted by the school board, the new zones will take effect at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. This proposal is due to the fact that Scales Elementary, Overall Creek Elementary and Cason Lane Elementary are currently over capacity or rapidly approaching their building capacity. Construction of a new school in that area provides the district with adequate space to handle up to 1000 students to help relieve the capacity issues.
SPECIFIC AREAS PROPOSED TO BE REZONED:
To provide adequate number of students to open up the new school and eliminate the overcrowding issues at the other schools, we will be rezoning some students there from Overall Creek, Scales and Cason Lane. We will also be adjusting some additional zone lines in the above listed schools to provide some room for future growth. Maps detailing each new school zone and the district zone are below.
Bus service will be provided to each of the schools located in their newly approved transportation zone area as per the district’s normal transportation guidelines.
The proposal is to allow all current fourth and fifth graders (rising fifth and sixth graders next year) to remain at their current school and not have to be included in the rezoning if they do not want to go to the rezoned school. If you choose to stay at your current school, you will have to provide your own transportation since bus service will only be provided to the appropriate rezoned school. A zone waiver will be required. Additional details will be posted after the final board approval of rezoning project.
