The world as WE see it!
Adventure, Knowledge, and Wisdom

Our painted lady butterfly caterpillars arrived in our classroom on April 29. We watched them eat and wiggle all around. their container. On May 5th they began to form their chrysalides. During morning work on May 15th , our first painted lady emerged from her chrysalid. It was a sight to behold. All of our butterflies have now emerged from their chrysalides. We will release these “beauties” on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Just like us they are ready to start summer!

We released our painted ladies on May 28, 2008. Like us they are ready to be let loose.

We had the fantastic opportunity to explore butterflies in the different stages of their life cycle. Ms. Deborah Paschell from the Wilderness Station at Barfield Park visited our classroom and shared her love of nature by teaching us about butterflies. We viewed a large chart with numerous pictures of eggs, caterpillars, chrysalis, and adult butterflies.
We explored several stations with living caterpillars, looked through microscopes at eggs, and watched butterflies in a netted observation habitat. We also experienced having butterflies land and rest on us in a netted tent. It was an experience that we won’t soon forget.
We read two pourquoi tales. They were Coyote and the Laughing Butterflies and
Coyote Places the Stars. Pourquoi tales are folk tales that explain the “why” of something that happens in nature. Coyote Places the Stars explains the constellations. Coyote and the Laughing Butterflies explains why butterflies fly zigzagging and fluttering in the wind. These pourquoi tales also show the culture of the story teller. These two
tales are from the Tewa/Pueblo Native American tribe. The illustrations in both stories by Harriet Peck Taylor were truly bright and beautiful.
We also demonstrated our knowledge of symmetry. by coloring and painting butterflies. They are beautifully displayed on the wall outside our classroom.
