The
Extended School Program (ESP) is responsible for all extended time activities
which take place before and after the regularschool day.
These include all Extended School Program sites, adult education, and the Family Resource
Centers, Safe Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Centers and other community
outreach programs. The Extended School Program offers academic tutoring,
homework sessions, enrichment classes, creative activities, and safe child care
for students who attend the Murfreesboro City School System. Programs and activities
are planned to enhance academic instruction which takes place during the traditional
hours. ESP is a branch of the Department of Instruction. The ESP Central Office
staff provide support and information to all before-and-after school programs
within the Murfreesboro City School System as well as the coordination of information
and production of materials concerning extended time issues. In conjunction with
the local cable commission, ESP aids in the production of television programs
featuring the school system and issues which impact education at the local level.
Implementation
of the state-funded Extended Contract Program helps to fund the academic and enrichment
programs which take place during the summer weeks and intersession periods throughout
the year. These activities are implemented in all schools under the supervision
of building principals and with the assistance of the Supervisor of ESP. Through
the Family Resource Centers, families of students enrolled in the school system
may obtain help or community services by contacting the coordinator, or by being
referred by school personnel. Throughout the year, adult education classes such
as computer skills of all levels, English as a Second Language and
GED are offered. Scholarships are available for qualified applicants. With funding
from a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, Murfreesboro City Schools
will establish three full service community learning centers (ATLAS) at Bellwood,
Bradley, and Hobgood schools, with two ESL satellite programs at Northfield and
Black Fox. All activities will be open to the families of the school system.
