Ways Parents Can Help Their Children

Reach Academic Success in Kindergarten

A parent plays an important role in a child’s early education.  Murfreesboro City Schools encourages parents to be an active part of their child's education.  The following are just a few ways you can be involved:

Read, talk, and listen to your child often and about a wide variety of subjects.

Ask to see your child's work.

Support your child and communicate that his/her academic success is important to you.

Stay in touch with your child’s teacher.  Know how your child is progressing.  Participate in parent-teacher conferences.

Talk to your child about what  he/she is learning. Help your child learn personal information such as name, address and phone number.

Provide opportunities for counting, sorting and comparing familiar objects.

Sing and say poems and rhymes with your child.

Give your child daily responsibilities such as choosing which clothing to wear to school or making his/her bed.

Help your child learn self-care skills such as toileting, washing, eating and dressing.

Provide a variety of art materials for creative expression.

Visit local points of interest, including the public library.

Provide nutritious meals and snacks; limit junk foods.

Be sure your child gets about 10 hours of sleep each night.

Provide opportunities for daily exercise to include free play as well as organized activities.

Take an active interest in your child’s school.
