On October 31, 2015, the Discovery School Robotics Team will return to Lipscomb University to participate in the annual Music City BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) engineering competition.

Designed as a competition for middle and high school students, Discovery school continues to be the only elementary school and the youngest collective team to participate in the event. This will be their 8th year entering the contest.

“This is a powerful experience for young students,” remarked Sarah Svarda, librarian at Discovery School. “It exposes students to challenges they have never faced and engages students at an analytical level.”

During the six-week competition students are charged with researching, designing, programming and presenting a robot that can complete specific tasks. This year’s tasks feature a mining challenge with a stock twist on mined commodities.

“For many students this competition leads them to explore a future in math and science,” Svarda continued.

In addition to the robotic engineering aspect of the game, student teams are required to create a team exhibit, conduct a 20-minute marketing presentation, write a 30-page engineering notebook and are judged on spirit and sportsmanship.

Last year Discovery school scored 2nd overall and advanced to the regional competition at Auburn University where they placed 12th.

“We would love for our community come out and support Discovery School’s team as they defend their second place win,” said Svarda.

The event is free and open to the public. Competition starts at 8 a.m. at the Allen Arena at Lipscomb University.
